The trishaw behind Cycling Without Age Australia.

Cycling Without Age gives people who can no longer ride a way back out into the world. Tribe is the authorised Australian dealer for the trishaw they ride: the Ricky Rickshaw.

Cycling Without Age started in Copenhagen in 2012, when Ole Kassow rented a trishaw and offered an older neighbour a ride. It is now a movement across more than 50 countries, with thousands of local chapters and tens of thousands of volunteers.

In Australia it runs as a not-for-profit charity. Volunteers, known as pilots, take residents of aged care homes and people who can no longer cycle for themselves out on free rides: along the river, through the park, back past the streets they grew up on.

The Ricky was refined with a local Cycling Without Age group riding the prototypes, which is why it is built the way it is: no-step entry, a 160kg front capacity, and one and two adult passenger configurations so a chapter can match the bike to the ride.

    Road legal

    Built to Australian Standards.

This bike is legal to ride on the road in all states and territories in Australia.

It complies with EN 15194, the standard Australian e-bike regulations are written around, which is what makes it road legal everywhere in the country rather than in some states and not others.

States are steadily writing that standard into their road rules, some already in force and others with dates set. This bike meets it today, so it does not become someone else's problem as the rest catch up.

Not sure what that means for where you ride? Ask us and we will talk you through it.

    EN 15194 compliant

    Things people ask

    General Product

Do you offer a wheelchair version?

    We’re working on it…

Can I use the Ricky commercially?

Yes, people run paid rides with it in tourist areas. Note the warranty terms differ for commercial and hire use, so talk to us first.

Is this the trishaw Cycling Without Age uses?

Yes. Many Cycling Without Age Australia chapters ride the Ricky.

Can someone who cannot ride a bike still come along?

That is exactly what it is built for. The passenger does nothing but sit. The front step is removable so there is no stepping up at all, which matters for elderly and less mobile passengers. A seatbelt and safety rail help them feel comfortable on the ride.

    Who is the Ricky for?

Two audiences. Chapters and volunteers doing joyrides for people who cannot cycle for themselves, which is where most Rickys go, and operators running paid rides in tourist spots. Either way the passenger seat is the point.

Some states are cracking down on Ebikes, how do I know I can legally ride this?

Tribe bikes are labelled with appropriate compliance labels. If police pull you over show them the label and they should leave you alone. If they still give you a hard time tell them to wake up to themselves.

    Do you offer test rides?

Currently we can offer test rides in Newcastle, NSW. If you are based in Newcastle and would like a test ride, send us an email. We also have a locals program, which we will be re-launching soon.

    Passengers & Safety

Is the Ricky suitable to carry disabled passengers?

We have made the Ricky as capable as possible to carry disabled passengers. Easy no step access, aircraft lap sash, safety rail, front kickstand.

Is there storage in the Ricky?

Yes, there is a large storage compartment where you can store blankets, spare batteries, snacks and whatever else your day requires!

    Can it handle rain?

The passenger box is 9mm marine grade plywood with a waterproof polyurethane coating, so it copes with showers. Like all our bikes it is not designed to live outdoors permanently.

Is it stable with two adults on board?

It is a three wheeler, so it stands up by itself at a stop with no balancing and no putting a foot down. The front wheels are custom built alloy specifically to carry heavy loads. Take corners slowly and it’s perfectly stable!

Do passengers need to wear helmets?

the road rules in Australia dictate all riders and passengers must wear a helmet, although we believe Cycling Without Age Australia has been granted exemptions in some states.

    How are passengers held in?

Aircraft style lap belts, and a safety bar to hold on to. The safety bar is removable for entry.

How much weight can the front carry?

160kg in the front, which is what lets it take two adults comfortably.

How many adults can ride up front?

One or two, depending on which Ricky you buy. The Ricky 1 has a 69cm bench for one adult, the Ricky 2 an 87cm bench for two.

    Electric Motor & Battery

    Do I have to pedal?

Yes, pedal assist only, no throttle. That is what keeps it road legal in Australia.

Will it get up hills with two passengers?

95Nm plus ten speeds is a lot of help, and it is the same motor the Evamos uses with more gear range behind it. With 160kg up front on a steep hill you are working, but it goes.

How far will one charge take me?

If you are carrying heavy weights expect to get about 30km out of a charge. Most Cycling Without Age Chapters purchase a second battery to get through a full day of riding.

    What battery does it use?

A 36V 13Ah 250W battery with LG cells, with the Spanninga light integrated into it.

What motor does the Ricky have?

A 250W Bafang M510 mid drive with 95Nm of torque, assisting to 25km/h. Near silent, and enough to move two adults without drama.

Are the batteries safe? I’ve heard about Ebike fires!

All of our batteries are tested to the European standard EN50604, the gold standard in battery testing. We use quality battery cells and can confidently say we have never known of a Tribe Bike fire. Always use the charger that comes with the bike. If you lose or damage it, buy a new one off us!

    Bike Specifications

    What tyres does it run?

2.1 inch Schwalbe Pickup puncture proof tyres, 24 inch at the rear and 20 inch at the front. Schwalbe Pickups are the bees knees of Cargo Bike tyres!

    What brakes does it have?

Front and rear hydraulic disc brakes designed for cargo bikes, so there is serious stopping power even down a steep hill. The front lever has an integrated park brake on a paddle, which matters when a passenger is getting in or out.

    What gears does it have?

Ten speed Shimano Deore. Enough range to get moving with two adults aboard and still cruise at 20 to 25km/h on the flat.

    What does the Ricky weigh?

The Ricky has some weight to it, it weighs about 60 kgs.

Will it fit through my gate or down my side path?

Measure for 88cm on the Ricky 1 and 101cm on the Ricky 2. Taking the safety bar off the Ricky 2 brings it to 93cm, which is often the difference.

What are the dimensions of the Ricky?

2.15m long and 120cm high. The Ricky 1 is 88cm wide, the Ricky 2 is 101cm wide, or 93cm with the safety bar removed.
