Tribe Bikes was launched based on our own needs, to better move our young families around and have fun in the process. Little did we realise when we launched, the diverse range of uses our bikes would have across Australia!
It soon became clear that cargo bikes aren’t just great for getting kids out and about, but also adults. We’ve had parents of disabled adult children wanting to get them out and about more, children of elderly parents wanting to see the smile on their faces as the wind blows in their hair, spouses who’s partners mobility issues mean they can no longer ride their own bikes and community groups who specialise in joy rides for the elderly and disabled.
We knew there was an opportunity to help these Australians get cargo biking so we set out to develop the Ricky Rickshaw. Today we launch V2.0 of the Ricky, our adult carrying ‘Trishaw’, with improved components and geometry. Take a look at what’s included.
Available in single or double adult configurations
Most Trishaws come in a single configuration, with a 900mm seat. This is great if you plan to carry multiple adults, but for those who just want to carry a single adult, you’re left with a very wide bike.
We’ve configured the Ricky in two configurations, with either a 700mm or 900mm wide seat. Everything else on the bike remains the same, pick the size that works for you.
Inbuilt passenger safety features
We know the passengers of the Ricky are likely to need some additional safety features for safe travelling, so we’ve equipped the Ricky with a large range of safety features.
Aircraft style seatbelts
Aircraft style seatbelts are simple to operate and ensures a safe and secure ride for passengers. The double Ricky comes with 2 seatbelts.
Safety rail
A front safety rail gives passengers a secure and comfortable place to put their hands and can be easily opened and closed.
Removable front step
Removable front step allows the elderly and disabled to enter and exit the bike without having to step up.
Front kickstand
Front kickstands allows for safe passenger loading and unloading by stopping the bike tipping forward.
High quality components
When you’re paying good money for a bike like this, it’s important that it has good gear on it. We’ve setup the Ricky with high quality and durable components.
Alloy front wheels
When you’re carrying heavy weights, spokes become the weak point. Alloy wheels are extremely durable and look cool too!
Shimano Deore Groupset
The Ricky has been equipped with a 10 speed Shimano Deore groupset, which gives plenty of range, shifts smoothly and gives plenty of KMs.
Schwalbe Pickup Tyres
Schwalbe Pickups are the bees knees when it comes to Cargo Bike tyres. 2.4″ width gives plenty of cushioning and they’re puncture resistant!
Tektro Cargo brakes
We use the same Tektro Twin Hydraulic brakes as the Tribe Original. They’ll stop you in no time and have an inbuilt parking brake too!
Motor with 95nM torque
We’ve upgraded the motor on the Ricky, with Bafang’s new M510 motor, offering a massive 95nM of torque. The motor is quiet, refined and has been geared up for carrying heavy loads, with high torque on startup.
Convenience and safety features
The full feature set on the Ricky is too long to list, but some of the other things we’ve included are a lockable large under seat storage compartment to carry a bag, blanket and whatever else you need on your adventures.
Front and rear lights are included as standard with low light sensors on the display to turn these on automatically as it gets dark.
We’ve set the Ricky up with am 800mm front wheelbase, which gives you plenty of stability and a surprisingly tight turning circle. Inbuilt gas steering dampers and steering stoppers stop you oversteering and keep the bike tracking straight.
A soft rubber capping of the sides gives a comfortable spot for passengers to place their arms.
Truly innovative Australian design
We’ve spent a long time on the Ricky v2.0. The design excites us, as far as we know the Ricky is Australia’s only single adult passenger TriShaw and by far Australia’s most affordable double adult TriShaw, but what excites us most is the opportunity this provides those who are unable to ride their own bike, to get out and enjoy the fresh air and the breeze in their hair.
